Anne and Nikoline:
The Individual Civic Engagement Award -- Faculty
went to Glynda Hull, professor of education, for helping
establish Digital Underground Storytelling for Youth
(DUSTY), an afterschool program that teaches multimedia
skills to low-income youth.
DUSTY
news 07/09/07
Anne and Nikoline:
Today friday at 5pm there is a DUSTY event at Burchkalter where all
the children are presenting their Digital Stories for 2007.
DUSTY news
Alicia Keys arranged for 80 Digital Underground Storytelling
for Youth (D.U.S.T.Y) participants to attend her dress
rehearsal and the “Meet and Greet” on Tuesday,
May 24th at the Paramount in Oakland. Last year, Alicia
also provided 80 concert tickets to the D.U.S.T.Y program.
Digital Underground Storytelling for Youth is a technology
and literacy program that combines writing and digital
media. It is collaboration among the Oakland Technology
and Education Center, the University of Berkeley’s
Graduate School of Education, and Allen Temple Baptist
Church. D.U.S.T.Y youth participants are currently producing
their own compilation CD and DVD. The program teaching
digital storytelling has added advanced film production,
giving youth the opportunity to be their own movie directors,
merging their written words with their voices, music
images, video music, and digital stories. D.U.S.T.Y
offers after-school programs in digital story telling,
digital music creation, and advanced film production.

Mary:
Here is the Castlemont check-in and the CAL class check-in:
Castlemont: Currently at Castlemont we are doing
some low-key tutoring on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and
doing regular programming on Mondays and Wednesdays.
The following is the schedule for Site Coordinators
at Castlemont:
Mondays: Mark Nelson and Morgan Hogarth ( undergrad
assistant)
Tuesdays: Mary Soltis
Wednesdays: Morgan Hogarth (will help the instructors)
Thursdays: Mark Nelson and Mary Soltis
Mark is creating individualized sign-in sheets for all
Castlemont DUSTY students to help monitor their attendance,
progress, and any needs they may have with their work.
This will be a bit different than how we have done sign-ins
in the past. More to come very soon :).
EDU 140AC (CAL class): Yesterday (Tuesday) was
the first day of class, and we had 105 students attend
(approximately seven did not show). So it looks as if
we will have approximately 100 tutors (give or take)
to work at the various DUSTY sites. I will start signing
students up for the sites, so that they will be ready
for the training that the instructors are providing
in the about a week and a half.
IF ANYONE would like to come to the class and give a
short "presentation" (Brooklyn, Tre, Sonia, and Michael
are already scheduled), let me know and we will schedule
you into the syllabus. This is a good way for the undergrad/tutors
to have a face with a name and know who will be at the
various sites.
Kofi-Charu Nat Turner (Cole Check-In)
The students are anxiously awaiting the arrival of the
tutors. I have made contact with the classroom teachers
of the six graders so there will be clear channels of
communication between them and the tutors. Tutors will
know what students have for homework each day and will
be able to assist the students in completing it. I am
planning to pair students who are in the same classes
with specific tutors so they can develop a deeper mentoring
relationship.
Over the past week three girls have gone through the
process of writing a song, typing it, rehearsing it,
and having it recorded. Almost half of the students
have successfully completed this process.
We are establishing a good working relationship with
the folks at MOCHA/Project Yield. We have been allotted
space to store our things and access to the computers,
printers, and copy machine in the office they use which
should all aid our work.
Sonia:
Students have the opportunity to showcase their completed
works on the YO! Television show that airs Sunday mornings
on the WB. Instructors should inform Sonia when she
could have a representative from the TV show come out
and review students work to air on the show. Work can
include music, digital stories, and video. There is
also opportunity to have an article written about the
DUSTY program in South Bound Magazine. If instructors
know of a student that is into journalism and a student
that is into photography they could team up and write
the article. They could send the work to me and I will
in turn send it to the chief editor of the magazine
for the next issue. I have also met and visited ME TV.
Mount Eden High TV who has offered to partner with the
DUSTY program to report our upcoming activities. They
have a production class complete with all the television
equipment necessary. The possibilities are endless.

DUSTY news 1/13/05
Glynda:
(1) Michael, Sonia, and Glynda met with the evaluators for our work
at Castlemont on Monday. It was a good meeting! The evaluators are
Penny Dyer, Paul Molinelli, and Debra Banks. Paul will start
interviewing students soon to get a sense of what they think of
DUSTY. Debra will compare the grades and test scores of students in
DUSTY with students who aren't.
(2) Michael, Mary, and Glynda had a conference call this week with
Carlin LLorente, who works with an organization called "America
Connects." He is assigned to us by the US Department of Education
(our main funder currently) to provide technical assistance to us.
We essentially just told Carlin what's happening at DUSTY, and he
said he'd be happy to help us however he could--for example, by
putting us in touch with other similar organizations, or locating
software for us, or helping us think about improving DUSTY. He said
we could call anytime, so here is his info:
Mr. Carlin Llorente
E-mail: cllorente@edc.org
Office: 415.750.1539
Cell: 415.317.5987
Mail: 811 36th Avenue
San Francisco CA 94121
(3) Please plan to attend our staff meeting at my place (Tiffany will
send directions) on Fri. Jan. 21st at 3 PM, followed by dinner at 6.
Carlin and also our evaluators Penny and Paul will probably stop by,
along with some of our previous staff members.
Denise:
Glynda will soon be sending out a more formal invite, but we have
scheduled an all-dusty meeting/dinner gathering at her house for
friday, 1/21.
3:00 - meeting
6:00 - dinner
Please notify the Administrative staff if you are unable to attend
this meeting/dinner.
Mary:
ED 140AC starts next week, January 18th when CAL comes back
to school. Until then, a few tutors from last semester are
willing to come before CAL starts to help with tutoring and
the evaluaiton and whatever else needs to be done.
We are still working on getting office space at Castlemont;
currently we are waiting to hear word from administrators
on where we can officially set up shop.
Other than that, things are moving along. We have a new
site coordinator, Mark Nelson, and we are looking forward
to when he will be on board and working with the Castlemont
staff.
Tiffany:
D.U.S.T.Y. takes Castelmont students to Mac World Field trip this
week! A total of 15 tickets for the event have been donated to the
organization from:
- Melissa Logan of Lacie
- Zigi Lowenberg, Academic Marketing Manager of Peachpit Publishing Group

DUSTY news 1/06/05
Good Afternoon All,
Please see the D.U.S.T.Y. Staff check-in below.
D.U.S.T.Y. Staff Check-In Week of Jan.4-7, 2005
Glynda Hull - UC Berkeley
Stacy Marple isn't going to be a GSI during spring; she'll most
likely be replaced by Coco Liboiron: cocolib@uclink.berkeley.edu.
Will let you know for sure.
Mark Nelson is going to join us as a site coordinator at Castlemont:
m_e_nelson@yahoo.com
Mary Soltis will teach 140AC as well as be head site coordinator at Castlemont.
We'll be hiring two undergraduates to help out at Castlemont. Mary
Soltis can give you their contact information.
There should be a few other additions as well; Michael and I will
keep you posted.
Mary Soltis (Castlemont Check-In)
The DUSTY program at Castlemont is in a "low-key" phase
right now because tutors have not returned yet from their
Christmas break. Some tutors from last semester will be
coming back next week (January 10) early to help bridge the
gap until the Ed 140AC class starts.
The ED 140AC class starts on January 18th (when the
semester starts for CAL). We will then have a new batch of
tutors and some returnees to cover Castlemont and Cole and
a new site in San Francisco where Mualimu works.
I (Mary Soltis) am away in Florida on business (yes, really
on business :). I will be back on January 12th, but I am
available by email and cell phone.
And last, but not least, our program evaluation team, run
by Penny Dyer, will be evaluating our program at Castlemont
starting on January 10th. They will be collecting data and
interviewing students, etc. They may need a little help
from the instructors on how to find some students that
could be interviewed.
Kofi-Charu Nat Turner (Cole Check-In)
The DUSTY program at Cole is warming up for the arrival of tutors in
the coming weeks. Even without the tutors on the site students are
trying to get back into the rhythm they had established before the
Christmas break. I am getting a firmer grasp on which students are in
the same classes and which students work well together so they can be
assigned to specific tutors.
The students have now watched as two students have gone through the
whole process of writing a song, typing it, rehearsing it, and having
it recorded. So now they are all busily typing up their songs so they
can record also.
I successfully got Zigi Lowenberg of Peach Pit Press to donate19
passes for students to attend MacWorld in San Francisco Jan. 12-15. I
(Kofi) will be doing research in L.A. Jan.13th and 14th but will be
available by email and cell phone and will be back on Jan.15.
Tiffany Hooker - Happy New Year Everybody!
Sonia and I are working currently working on a grant from the City of
Oakland; funds received from this grant will be used to support the
Castlemont Student Film Festival/Carnival along with a series of
workshops to be held in the summer of 2005. The grant is due by
January 14th and writing is on target at this time.
